One Health Conference

Introduction

One Health is the concept that human, animal, and environmental health are intertwined. Collaboration of all relevant sectors is key and the current COVID19 pandemic reassured the need for One Health approach and interdisciplinary when confronting global health challenges. Amoud University is hosting a regional networking conference for the Horn of Africa universities (3rd -5th January 2022) to showcase the current One Health implementation status, research capacity, and creating a future collaborative network to facilitate partnershipbetween researchers and institutions. Representatives from 20 universities, International and local Non-Governmental Organizations, UN agencies, Government and private sector will participate in a three-day networking event in Amoud University, Borama, Somaliland. The conference was sponsored by One Health Regional Network for the Horn of Africa (HORN) and Amoud University.

High-level government officials from the health, livestock, and environmental sectorswill participate in the launching ceremony. Amoud University will also welcome the delegates to the city. One Health Regional Network for the Horn of Africa (HORN) project will be briefly introduced. Several exciting keynote speeches including Introduction to One Health, Experience of One Health research in the region, HORN project regional activities, and the need for research collaboration will be given. The day ends with collecting ideas and discussing participants’ thoughts on One Health..

In this session, one Health status of each country (Somaliland, Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti) will be presented by zooming to the areas of research activities, integration between the sectors, capacity building, and institutionalization. Researchers from participating universities will also present some ongoing One Health research projects and institutional levelactivities. Akeystone speech on regional OneHealth capacity and future perspectives will be delivered. The day concludes with a panel discussion where participants will have a chance to discuss the need for a regional network platform where universities and research institutions can easily collaborate. Challenges and opportunities will be the main areas this discussion.

1- Study one: Investigating Prevalence and Identifying Risk Factors of Bovine Tuberculosis in Cattle and Humans in an Agro-pastoral Community in Awdal region, Somaliland).

2- Study Two: Knowledge and Perceptions of COVID-19 among Health Care Workers in Somaliland

3- Study Three: Evaluation of Surveillance Systems, Risk Mapping and Assessment of KAPs among High-Risk Groups in The Horn of Africa.

4- Study Four: Factors Associated with Uptake and Adherence to Recommended Public Health Measures Against Covid-19 in urban and rural Kenya.

5- Study Five: Impacts of Climate Change on Animal and Human Health and implications on Food Insecurity in Ethiopia.

The last day begins with a presentationhighlightingthe current One Health policiesand institutionalization in Africa and the region. Non-governmental bodies and private sector willreflect their strategies on One Health implementation. Representative from the line ministries of Health will highlight the existing One Health activities and current collaboration between the government sectors.A keynote speech on building blocks of One Health Network and evaluations will be delivered. In a panel discussion, participants from the universities will then discuss future collaborations and conceptualizationto create a One Health network platform. A Gala dinner in the evening with official closing remarks fromAmoud University and Somaliland Government Officials will mark the end of the conference.
